12/25/2023 0 Comments Led zeppelin album flow chart“…Our only goal will be the western shore.” This phrase refers to the band wanting to take over the music charts of America. “From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow” refers to the northern lands that the Vikings came from, where the sun never sets in summer. Robert Plant wrote the song in Iceland and was very amused with folklore. The song is actually comparing the band to Vikings, while telling the story of the Vikings of Norsemen invading Britian. The remaining of the song is about the band touring and meeting people who do not know about hard drugs like meth and coke how they want to have total have power in the drug world. They state that lyrics in the song such as “We come from the land of the ice and snow” are names that refer to common drug nicknames “How soft your fields so green…” is said to be the feeling when high. Most people believe “Immigrant Song” is based on the bands drug use. Many of Led Zeppelin’s songs have various meanings based on your knowledge of the band and how literal of a person you are affects your opinion of the songs meanings. The Vikings are seeking a relationship based on peace and trust without any hard feelings. The Vikings are requesting peace so that the conquered can rebuild their ruins. However, the last verse seems to be almost a cry for peace. Vikings are infamous for raping and pillaging. By the last two lines of this verse it is obvious that the Vikings won the battle and have no conquered England. "How soft your fields so green can whisper tales of gore" refers both the type of countryside England has (very green, excellent for farming) and also refers to a mighty battle that took place. "On we sweep with threshing oar/ our only goal would be the western shore" is a reference to Viking ships and how the Vikings would row to new lands in order to conquer them. "Valhalla, I am coming" is a reference to the Viking version of heaven which only warriors who had died bravely in battle could gain access to. "Hammer of the Gods" is a reference to the Viking god Thor who carried a hammer. "We come from the land of the ice and snow" is a direct reference to Iceland itself. The literal interpretation of Immigrant Song is that it is about the Viking conquest of England. It reminded Plant of Vikings, big ships, and John Bonham's stomach. When the workers who were supposed to prepare Zeppelin's concert went on strike the students in the region banded together to help prepare for the concert instead. Robert Plant actually wrote Immigrant Song whilst touring Iceland. It is different from the rest of the album which features a more folk, and acoustic feel rather than the heavy metal/hard rock style displayed in Led Zeppelin and Led Zeppelin II. Immigrant Song, which opens Led Zeppelin III is obviously a heavy metal song.
